Two to four sprays of Club de Nuit Intense Man is correct for almost every situation. Use two for an office or any enclosed space, three for everyday wear, and four for a cold evening outdoors. Apply to the chest and the sides of the neck, onto moisturised skin, before you dress. Never rub it in.
This fragrance is stronger than most things people have worn before it, and the usual habits do not transfer. Someone moving from a supermarket body spray will apply six sprays out of muscle memory and spend the evening being avoided. The dose is the difference between this smelling expensive and this smelling like a mistake.
| Situation | Sprays | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Office, meeting, small room | 2 | Chest only, under a shirt |
| Everyday, out and about | 3 | Chest and one side of the neck |
| Evening out, cold weather | 4 | Chest, both sides of the neck |
| Formal event, indoors | 2 | Chest, applied 20 minutes early |
| Hot summer day | 1–2 | Chest only |
| Date, close quarters | 2 | Chest and back of the neck |
Why two is often the right number
The 105ml eau de toilette and the eau de parfum both project hard for the first two hours. Two sprays creates a scent bubble roughly an arm's length across, which is what fragrance is supposed to do. Four sprays roughly doubles that radius. Six makes you the dominant smell in a lift.
The problem is that you cannot judge this yourself. Nose fatigue removes your own fragrance from your awareness within twenty minutes, so by the time you think it has worn off, everyone else is still getting it at full strength. Count your sprays deliberately rather than spraying until you notice something.
Where to apply it, in order of usefulness
The chest
Best placement by a distance. Warm, covered by clothing, and the fabric traps and slowly releases the fragrance through the day. Body heat rises, so a chest application drifts upward and is what people catch when they are near you. One spray here is worth two anywhere else.
The sides of the neck
Second best, and the placement people notice when they greet you or lean in. Keep it to one spray a side. This area is exposed to the air, so it burns through faster than the chest.
The back of the neck
Useful and underused. It sits under a collar, stays warm, and leaves a trail behind you as you move rather than pushing fragrance at whoever is in front of you. If you find the fragrance too loud but want it to last, move a spray here.
Shoulders and upper back
Only relevant in summer or in a t-shirt. It puts the fragrance where air moves across it without concentrating it near anyone's face.
Wrists and forearms
Skip them. They are the traditional placement and the worst one for this fragrance. Wrists get washed, they are constantly exposed, and rubbing them together, which everyone does automatically, crushes the top notes and shortens the whole wear.
The five mistakes people make
- Rubbing it in. Spray and leave it. Rubbing generates heat and friction that destroys the opening.
- Spraying over a shirt collar. The alcohol sits on the fabric surface and the first ten minutes smell sharper than they should. Spray onto skin, wait, then dress.
- Spraying in the car. The fragrance settles into upholstery and you end up driving a scented vehicle for weeks.
- Adding a top-up you cannot smell. If you cannot smell it, that is nose fatigue, not fade. Ask someone before reaching for the bottle.
- Using the same dose in July as in January. Heat amplifies this fragrance considerably. Summer needs one or two fewer sprays than the same outing in winter.
Adjusting for format
| Format | Standard dose | Note |
|---|---|---|
| EDT 105ml | 3–4 | Sharpest opening, apply before dressing |
| EDP 30ml and 200ml | 3–4 | Softer opening, most forgiving of an extra spray |
| Pure Perfume 150ml | 1–2 | Denser. Two indoors is already a lot |
| Perfume oil 20ml | 2 dabs | Neck and wrists, no projection to worry about |
| Body spray 200ml | 4–6 | Much weaker, use across the torso |
The Pure Perfume 150ml is the format most often overapplied, because people assume the same dose transfers across the range. It does not. Treat it as roughly half the sprays you would use with the eau de toilette.
The 20ml perfume oil is the exception to the wrist rule, since there is no alcohol to evaporate and no projection to manage. Two dabs, one on each side of the neck, is a full application.
A practical routine
Shower, dry off, and apply an unscented moisturiser to the chest while the skin is still slightly damp. Spray two to four times depending on where you are going, holding the bottle about fifteen centimetres away so the spray disperses rather than pooling. Wait five minutes. Then dress.
If you are going out for the evening and want it to carry, add one spray to the inside of a jacket lapel rather than a fifth spray on skin. Fabric holds this fragrance far better than you do, and it will still be there when you get home.
If you are new to it, the 30ml eau de parfum is the easiest bottle to learn on, since a small atomiser discourages the enthusiastic overapplication that a 200ml bottle invites. The rest of the Club de Nuit range follows broadly the same rules, with the fresher fragrances tolerating an extra spray.
Who it's for and who should skip it
This approach works if:
- You want the fragrance noticed by people near you rather than across a room.
- You work or travel in close quarters and cannot afford to get the dose wrong.
- You have been told, gently or otherwise, that you wear too much.
- You want a bottle to last years rather than months.
Ignore all of this if:
- You are outdoors in genuine cold, where four to five sprays is reasonable.
- You are using the body spray, which needs several times the dose to register.
- You have very dry skin, where an extra spray compensates for poor retention.
- You specifically want to be the loudest thing in the room and have somewhere appropriate to do it.
Frequently asked questions
How many sprays of Club de Nuit Intense Man should I use?
Two in an office or any enclosed space, three for everyday wear, and four for a cold evening outdoors. The eau de toilette and eau de parfum both project hard for the first two hours, so more than four is rarely useful and frequently counterproductive in close quarters.
Where should I spray Club de Nuit Intense Man?
The chest first, under a shirt, where body heat and fabric hold it longest. Then one spray to each side of the neck if you want more presence. The back of the neck is useful for leaving a trail without projecting forwards. Avoid the wrists entirely with the spray formats.
Should I spray on skin or clothing?
Skin for the main application, clothing for reach. Spraying onto bare skin before dressing avoids the sharp alcohol edge you get spraying over a collar. One extra spray on a jacket lapel adds hours of presence. Test pale fabrics first, as the ambery base can mark them.
Why can I not smell my own fragrance after half an hour?
Your sense of smell filters out constant signals, which removes your own fragrance from your awareness within about twenty minutes. Other people still smell it clearly. Reaching for the bottle at that point is how most overapplication happens. Count sprays instead of relying on your nose.
Does the Pure Perfume need the same number of sprays?
No, use about half. The Pure Perfume is considerably denser than the eau de toilette, and two sprays indoors is already a strong application. One is often correct in a warm room. Applying the standard three or four is the most common mistake people make with that format.
How many sprays of the body spray should I use?
Four to six, across the torso rather than concentrated in one spot. It is a much weaker product than the spray fragrances and needs a heavier hand to register at all. Expect around ninety minutes of noticeable wear, so treat it as a top-up rather than a full application.
